Now what? We have just visited the New designers in Islington. Exhibition of creative graduates. It put it in perspective of how much young talents there are, and we wondered what happens to all these students when they leave and which ones make it in the creative world. This could be an interesting blog. We were walking around and could feel a hundred hungry students eyes in the back of our head hoping for that first opportunity. We obviously no longer looked like students anymore and had reached a significant age to possible be in a senior position. Our plan now is possible to take on some students and develop their works onto a few products as we have a boutique shop Three Potato Four interested in possible a range of age cards to start with but I think perhaps we could do more…..
We have briefed a talented Origami book making artist student to create some cards. After having a meeting with a company called The London Cushion Company we are discussing perhaps using some of her designers to produce other products but I don’t want to talk too much about this at this stage until we have done some costings and discussed this in more detail with the company.
We are quite excited about this new adventure. We were looking at a site the other day and came across this www.disposableemoryproject.org a project where disposable cameras have been left all around the world and people take pictures with them and then email them on this blog, fascinating stuff. Our friend Helen who runs the East End Arts Club is now writing a blog which is something interesting to follow.

Good News! We had an email from a friend who had a pop up show ‘ off side‘ about the World Cup, 1 Rivington place, old street and was looking for images and interested in what we had been doing to exhibit alongside people such as Jess Wilson. One of us had an interview for a job that day so in a frenzy we cycled, two people on one bike ‘ searching for a cheap printers who had been recommended to us which was at the end of Grays Inn road, why are places that you need to find always on the longest of streets and always on the hottest of days. We never found this printer, but we did find a great printer called mj.uk.com a fantastic friendly printers positioned on Clerkenwell road who prints banners, to offset litho, and were willing to print 2 x A1 of our image, one to be sent to Italy to be part of a ‘BN Post It Up‘ which is an exhibition in Avellino streets and the other to be shown at the show ‘ Off Side’.
If your are starting your own business do not rely on your own football team, a business is a gamble in itself and if it fails you do not want to see your team loose 2- 3 and sob into an Italian World Cup t-shirt that no one wants any more.
Our initial intention was to think that we could cash in selling t-shirts for the World Cup and use the money to invest into a creative concept we had discussed.
Our reflection on this is that we missed discussing the four most important things in every business which is to identify your strengths, weaknesses, threats and risks. Now we know what these four key things mean in reality!
In hindsight we were naive to start printing two weeks before the World Cup started. The majority of the product should have been sold before the first game, with no time built in for errors which as we discovered is inevitable. The 15 embroidered flag patches for the T- Shirts from Ebay got lost in the post and so by the third game we still did not have a complete finished batch and it was too late to order any more. Luckily we managed to get our money back in exchange for writing a good review. On reflection we had optimistically not even imagined our main risk and this was if Italy got knocked out in the first half we would have stock left that no one would want anymore. As a small business we should have used the embroidered flags badges to make it suitable for the World Cup and if we had any stock left we could have still sold these by excluding them from the shirts. What do other companies do with left over event stock? Does it get recycled or burnt? We also felt that the design was perhaps trying to do too many things, be commercial and yet political and we had not identified which customer we were targeting. After the match we gave them away and at least uplifted a few spirits of a rather ashamed, Italian group of supporters outside Bar Kick in Old Street. Our spirits were low for more than one reason.
We had pre match nerves, not sure if it was the thought of trying to sell our t – shirts on the street or wanting Italy to win. We were also feeling a bit flat after finding out that we had got one of the dates Italy won the World cup in the thirties incorrect on 26 T- Shirts and we may have to re call the product and give the money back. This was a setback as it was a project we had only just broken even on and so would mean cash flow was now in the negative equity. We tried to see a positive from a negative and reassured each other that you don’t learn from getting everything right in business and this mistake would make us more vigilant in the future by checking details. Like the rest of Italians living in London we had decided the best place to watch the game was Bar Italia in Soho but were naive to believe this would be a small intimate affair, in a room with a few beers?
They were charging £10.00 at the door, and had blackened off the window to prevent people standing outside and watching the game and there was already a queue of angry Italians not being allowed in. There was also a large police presence outside the bar which was intimidating in itself. None of us felt like being crammed into a darkened room like a Sardinian sardine for the price of £10.00. We were luckily on our bikes and we decided to go to Bar Kick in Old street instead where we could at least watch the game and breath oxygen, while trying to sell some t – shirts outside during half time.
On leaving Soho we approached a small Italian group of young men to see if they would like to buy our t- shirt we were disappointed when they said they voted for him and were not interested.
Mimicking the Italian game we were not feeling like World champions after our day, and initial start and knew that we would have to fight back to defeat our mistake and perhaps defend our crown with a draw, breaking even financially. Like all matches the first goal or the first sale is important to give the team confidence and become less defensive. I knew I needed to restore some confidence in the group we had appointed to sell our t- shirts and after one beer in Bar Kick, I bravely approached an italian group smoking outside and they loved it! We were away… The T- shirt provoked many discussions and if not purchased at times certainly highlighted diversity of opinion within the groups of friends and a point of political discussion important at a time when people our distracted from current affairs by the games.
One such common feeling among the people were they felt there was no one stronger than Berlousconi to run their country. I am not sure if this is a reason to accept it and without discussion nothing will change?
Loosing the goal keeper Buffon to injuries in the match was not great start for Italy and as a team not looking particularly like the overall winners. We are hoping for a better result next time selling our t- shirts in a new Italian bar in Stoke Newington on Church Street called. ‘Datte Foco’ which has a reputation for delicious oven baked pizzas, and football atmosphere.
See you there!
The World Cup is upon us, tonight we went to Bar Kick in old street to see if we could sell our t – shirts here or outside on the street. We have found out that if yout want to sell something on the street you need what is known as a ‘Hacklers license’ but if your selling a load of old junk, drugs or handing out flyers you don’t need one! This license costs £40.00 for administration and you could still get rejected if you do not answer the criteria, one of which you have to prove you have your own public liability insurance, which I persume means if someone trips up over your t- shirt you could be in trouble? The bar as predicted was not keen for us to sell our t- shirts and said it was a ‘ conflict of interest‘ but sent a nice email to us to wish us luck. We have decided to print out some flyers with our t – shirt design and website listed to hand out at the match on Monday so we don’t get arrested as we would like to see all of the Italian match against Paraguay.
….
With the World cup nearly upon us we have an exciting commission to produce twenty World cup staff t- shirts for Trattoria Sapori in Newington Green. They are intending to position a maxi screen showing the games outside. The staff our mainly Italian and as we know the Italian team won the World cup 2006, the atmosphere should be electric if Italy reaches the semi final especially if it with England! We live in hope…. The Italians are notorious at football grounds for their sense of humour and passion when cheering their teams. Trattoria Sapori will be the place to watch football while chewing on a Traditional oven baked pizza, and drinking an italian chilled beer. If the sun shines, for a moment you may feel that you are in Italy and not on a roundabout!
We started designing and decided that Berlusconi who is controlling the television in Italy by owning the majority of the T.V stations would be a strong icon to suggest that even he would be distracted from his obsession with his female pursuits for a moment while the whole World focused away from the economy/politics to football. Contacting a recommended local screen printer in Kentish Town ‘Fifth Column Limited’ we discovered that to produce a one colour t-shirt on both sides, inclusive of t-shirts, design and administration we would make a grand total of £30.00 profit for what the client was prepared to pay for it. We looked at each other trying to be positive and we both said at least it could pay for producing another design which was exciting enough to consider it as a worthwhile project. What is currently difficult is the public perception of how much a garment costs to make, swayed by cheap prices from large retailers such as Primemark who are able to order from manufacturers in the 3rd World factories that demand min orders of 200 T- shirts. We recently attended a show called Pick me up at Somerset house. An exhibition that created a studio setting of famous artists, illustrators such as Rob Ryan. I heard a few people comment that they had never comprehended how much time went into producing a piece of artwork, screen printed or hand cut and now understood why a small print might cost over £100.
We looked at Transfer printing onto a new paper called Techi print 4.0 as a cheaper option but this worked out more expensive due to the colour printing costs and the time spent hand heating it onto the t- shirts. The only advantage of printing like this would be if you had a multi – coloured design.
We are waiting for a response from the client as we have just heard that they are not prepared to pay the cost price never mind the price we would need to sell it for to make our grand profit of £30!
We have thinking of going alone and produce some designs for the World cup regardless of any orders. We have ideas for designer World cup t-shirts for children and adults. Watch this space!
